Chapter Twelve

RIPPLES OF PLEASURE still undulated through Laura when she awoke. Part of her drowsy mind recognized that she was lying on a soft nest of blankets, for Gavin had brought pillows and blankets and a coverlet from the big bed.

Through the long night they had loved and slept and loved again, and the memories of his kisses and caresses were an extended dream of pleasure. Stretching like a contented cat, Laura snuggled closer to her husband.

He wasn’t there. Immediately all sleep left her, and she sat up. The coverlet fell to her waist, and the coolness of dawn touched her much-kissed nipples. Then she saw that Gavin hadn’t gone far. He had tossed a robe over his shoulders, and was looking through rain-beaded windows.

Rising silently from the makeshift bed, she went to him, wrapped her arms about his waist, and pressed her cheek against his back. “Good morning, husband,” she murmured.

He turned slightly to draw her around and into his arms. “You slept well?”

His deep voice was soft with a tenderness that caused her heart to turn gently within her.

“Did you?” she wondered.

“There were too many distractions.” He kissed her tumbled hair, then pulled open his robe and drew her inside it so that she was pressed against his hard warmth. Delighted, she registered a more insistent hardness.

“It seems we have to cope with yet another distraction,” she teased him, but he didn’t follow her lead.

“Laura,” he began, “I must tell you—”

She locked her arms around his neck and kissed him, hard, as if her kiss could keep back words that might intrude on their happiness. He returned her kisses, but after a moment drew back.

“Reese and I must ride for Scotland.”

It was as if ice water had been dashed into her face. “Today?” she breathed.

He nodded. “Within the hour WE must leave for Nairn.”

A part of her mind registered that he’d told her what she wanted to know: Cumberland was moving his men to Nairn, some miles east of Inverness. But for once she didn’t care about information that might help the prince. “You’re going to fight!” she cried.

Resting his cheek against her bright hair, Gavin realized that he’d never felt worse about anything in his life. Once, the pursuit of wealth and revenge had been his guiding star, and fighting had been his key to that goal. Life had been so simple then, but now everything was changed.

“You’ll be safe here,” he told Laura. “The king himself has you under his protection, and Randall won’t be able to walk for a week. Reese has dealt with Beck. You’ll have no trouble with anyone, sweeting.”

She shook her head at such paltry concerns. “I’m worried for you.”

He smiled down at her. “Don’t worry. I’ll come back without a scratch.”

But suppose he didn’t come back at all? Not long ago she had wished him dead, and Lochiel had often warned her that curses came home to roost. Laura shivered and burrowed her face against Gavin’s chest. “Don’t go,” she implored him.
